Health & Safety and Environment (HSE) Officer

 

About This Job

 

We are currently seeking to recruit an HSE Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations and standards, with a proactive, hands-on approach aimed at fostering a safe and sustainable workplace.

 

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety

– Conduct daily audits to ensure compliance with H&S policies and procedures, ensuring that corrective actions are taken promptly to reduce risk.

– Be present during risk assessments and follow through on required actions until completion.

– Continuously review and develop existing health and safety policies and procedures to meet higher standards.

– Support and participate in incident investigations, ensuring that thorough reports are compiled and necessary improvements are implemented.

– Conduct H&S committee meetings, fire drills, and maintain an effective emergency preparedness team.

– Monitor compliance with requirements related to Material Safety Data Sheets, REACH, and process safety management.

– Organise H&S training sessions and ensure that all necessary staff certifications are current.

– Oversee the certification process of lifting equipment and ensure all fire safety systems and equipment are serviced and maintained in line with legal obligations.

– Stay informed of legal changes and ensure compliance through implementation of any new HSE requirements.

 

Environment

– Implement and continuously improve environmental practices and procedures in line with local and EU legislation.

– Monitor and report on air emissions, ensuring compliance with permit conditions and identifying opportunities to reduce pollutant levels.

– Oversee water usage and discharge monitoring, working to ensure compliance with water regulations and reduction in consumption and wastewater impacts.

– Ensure correct storage, labelling, and handling of chemicals, including compliance with REACH requirements.

– Assist in identifying and assessing climate-related risks, contributing to climate adaptation and resilience planning.

– Develop and track progress against environmental targets such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and carbon footprint minimisation.

– Coordinate and support Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) where applicable, including preparation of reports, follow-up of mitigation measures, and stakeholder engagement.

– Maintain documentation and data collection to support environmental audits and ensure all environmental records are kept up to date.

– Raise awareness within the team through training and communication on environmental best practices and sustainability goals.

– Collaborate with relevant authorities and partners to ensure alignment with national environmental priorities and initiatives.

 

The Candidate

The ideal candidate should have:

– An MQF Level 6 qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline; or

– A Diploma in Health & Safety or equivalent, recognized by the Occupational Health and Safety Authority as a competent person under Maltese Law; or

– A valid NEBOSH certification and proven experience in a similar HSE role.

 

Candidates should possess strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and effective problem-solving capabilities. A background in first aid or nursing would be considered an asset.
